Harvest Journal and Putting Up

My garden is coming along so great. I love going out there everyday and seeing how much it changes in just hours! It is especially fun to see it after I have been away a few days.

My June harvest:

  • Easter Egg Radish: 37 radishes
  • Arugula: 5 cuttings
  • Strawberries: 35 berries
  • Anehiem Peppers: 2
  • Red Lettuce: 4 cuttings
  • Salad Mix: 5 cuttings
  • Spinach: 3 cutting (then it went straight to blolting...) Going to replant tomorrow.
  • Raspberries: 4 harvests (I am hoping to can a small batch of jam this weekend)
  • Endive: 3 cuttings (It was really bitter) I am learning more about this plant as it is my first year growing it. I have the heirloom, Sugarloaf variety.
  • Simpson Lettuce: 2 cuttings

A baby pumpkin! One of my most favorite things! This is the first year I have been able to grow my own since I was kid!
My harvest on July 1st.
First big raspberry harvest. I have frozen them so I can put up some jam this weekend.
Tonight I harvested some mint, thyme and oregano from my herb pots here at the house. I have cilantro, basl and rosemary at the garden plot but I also have a large pot here at the house for "just outside the door" herb harvesting. It has thyme, rosemary, oregano and chives in it. I have had the same herb pot with the same herbs for about 4 years now and for whatever reason, this year the thyme and oregano are going nuts! I decided to harvest some for drying so I would have some great herbs this winter. I love bringing the harvest and being able to preserve things I have grown myself!
Freshly harvested
Mint on top, oregano middle, and thyme on bottom of picture.
Freshly rinsed and drying before I tie them up and hang in the pantry to dry.
I read an articil in this wonderful magazine by Better Homes and Gardens, Canning, about drying foods (starting on page 92 of the 2013 issue) and one suggestion was to cut the large leaf herbs, like basil, down the center of the leaf to encourage faster drying. I am going to try that with the mint.

I really enjoyed the whole magazine. My boyfriend saw it in the checkout line at Safeway while I was out in the car waiting for him and instantly bought it and surprised me with it. So sweet! He knows me too well! I hope you pick up a copy for yourself! Happy harvesting and putting up!
