Community Garden Adventure 2013

Now that we live in an area with tons of tree cover I have decided to join the local community garden. It has been lots of fun and TONS of work! I have an advertised 10' x 40' plot but in reality I think it is 5.5' buy 40' but that is OK I think I have all on the plot I can handle at the moment. It came with raspberries and strawberries left over from the previous tenant. I am excited about that since those were 2 things I was thinking about growing. This weekend was spent weeding and tilling the plot. Just that added up to 9 hours of dirt time. Who needs a gym membership when you have a garden plot!! Take me to the gym I give you about an hour. Take me to the garden plot, I stay until my arms will hardly move. I found rototilling to be the hardest work out I have had in a long time. It was my first time ever operating a rototiller by myself and I still have all my fingers and toes so I think I did pretty good!

Before
After
I planted some marigolds, rosemary, and 2 cucumber plants. The little plot of dirt in the middle right is where the strawberries are. I want to get some sort border to kind of control them a bit. Can't decide what to do with it yet. I think I am going to put a few rows of corn in behind my raspberry plants at the end of the plot as I have about 3 ft of empty space behind them. The hardest thing is trying to envision where to put everything when I have such a blank canvas. Ah well. I'm sure I will figure it out as I start getting more and more plants!
